We don’t usually publish information from works on other websites, but this guide was so helpful in describing wedding streamers, tosses, poppers and other alternatives to rice, that we thought you would enjoy it.

We will eventually write about each section in detail, but in the meantime, we have decided to publish this piece because it is so informative and worthwhile. Take a look to see if if it helps you!

Send Off Any Wedding in Style With Decorative Wedding Toss Favors
By Kathryn Lively

It’s perhaps one of the more enduring scenes of any wedding: the newly married bride and groom dash out of the church or reception hall into a crowd of well-wishers. Confetti-like favors sparkle and shower the couple as friends and relative shout their congratulations and blessings for a long life together. The wedding toss that sees the newlyweds off on their honeymoon is a time honored tradition, and these days couples and reception planners have chosen to add their own unique twists to the occasion. So can you.

The Wedding Toss – Alternatives to Rice

The tradition of such a send off to a married couple is believed to have roots as far back as the early centuries, B.C. The ancient Romans, to celebrate a union, would toss walnuts to old friends after marrying, and as time passed the tables turned to have guests christen the couple with almonds, or rice. Rice in particular symbolized fertility and the hope of many children, while during the Middle Ages it was though to ward off evil spirits that might threaten the marriage.

These days, people try to avoid rice on the belief that it is not good for the environment to leave dry grains loose on the floor. Birds and other animals that eat the rice might experience health problems, plus it is a challenge to clean up. If you are planning your own ceremony and reception, or are assisting the bride and groom-to-be, consider safer, more memorable options for the grand toss.

Rose Petals: Fragrant and lovely, fresh rose petals lend an air of elegance to any wedding. As favors they may be sprinkled on guest tables or around the cake for an attractive presentation, and as a toss item they are biodegradable and easy to clean.

Streamers: Imagine hundreds of silver streaks saluting the married couple as they dash to their limousine. Wedding streamers create an amazing pictures worth a thousand words and are fun to throw and tangle up during a joyful occasion.

Bubbles: Some wedding venues will not allow the traditional tosses of birdseed or other items for environmental reasons, so if you need another option, give your guests miniature bottles of bubbles. As the newlyweds leave, everybody fills the air with beautiful bubbles for an imaginative send-off.

Wedding Poppers: These wedding favors often come in small plastic bottles shaped like champagne. They “pop” open to reveal confetti or streamers to celebrate a wedding. You may find these in bulk at favor and novelty shops – look for biodegradable varieties for a “greener” reception.

Rice may be nice, but when it comes to a wedding toss it just won’t do anymore. Jazz up your reception and traditions with a toss that complements your personalities, and be creative. Your guests will remember the moment for years to come.
