History of Wedding Bells

25 July 2007 No Comment

When a couple is deeply involved and attached, their loved ones begin to speculate that wedding bells may be in their future. Because tradition changes so much and weddings are not the traditional event they once were, wedding bells are not actually used in every ceremony today.

However the symbolism remains alive and you will find wedding bells on many different wedding paraphernalia and you will probably still see, if not hear, some form of a wedding bell at most weddings today. The wedding bells have become an icon of reflection in the celebration of marriage through their beautiful music. But why wedding bells?wedding-bells

The history of the wedding bells dates back to the 1500’s when it was feared that many young women would be plagued by evil spirits. When women used open carriages as their main transportation, these young girls were seen as easy target for evil spirits. Many brave defenders, and possible courters, would ring bells to scare away the spirits that were destined to corrupt the young woman.

When the couple would marry, bells would ring as they left the chapel for the same reason. In fact, the fear of evil spirits was so rampant, that the bride would ask all of her maids to dress alike and surround her on her wedding day to “confuse” the evil spirits about which one she was. And that too, is the tradition of today’s bridesmaid.

Today we ring wedding bells to celebrate the love and joy of a new marriage, and in our hearts, wish the darker things in life avoid the happy couple.
