History of Wedding Toasts
The toast is believed to have originated from the days when it was common to poison one’s enemies by slipping something into their glass
of wine. The toast was poured from a common bowl or pitcher and drunk first by the host to show that the wine was safe to drink. This would be done each time the pitcher was filled.
