The traditional wedding kimono, known as a uchikake, is a long robe worn unbelted over a regular white or pastel kimono (kakeshita) and sash (obi). The uchikake is longer than an everyday kimono – about six feet long – and has a heavily padded hem so that it trails behind the bride as she walks.

Originally aired in 1991, the fourth season of Star Trek, The Next Generation, and entitled Data’s Day, Keiko Ishikawa, a botanist aboard the Enterprise and Miles O’Brien, Transporter Chief of the ship, hold their wedding in Ten Forward. Married in the year 2367, the ceremony performed by Captain Picard is a combination of Japanese and Irish traditions. Data assumes the role of father-of-the-bride walking the bride down the aisle in order to keep with tradition.
